Murrindindi Rural Sanctuary
A refined expression of contemporary rural living
Perched gently along a ridgeline in a scenic valley of the Murrindindi shire, approximately two hours north-east of Melbourne, this exceptional Hedger Constructions residence embraces its tranquil surroundings.
Created as both a private sanctuary and a welcoming space for entertaining, the home was realised in collaboration with Spowers Architects and interior designers Studio McGilp. A thoughtful spatial layout divides the home into two distinct wings—one for guests and one for the owners—connected by expansive, light-filled central living areas that encourage connection and flow.

The architectural form is deliberately restrained, with a low 12-degree roof pitch and a muted palette inspired by the surrounding landscape, allowing the home to sit harmoniously within its environment. Externally, a carefully curated mix of materials brings depth and texture, including Fine Adze granite, handmade Danish brickwork and feature cladding in yellow stringybark. A custom-designed Tasmanian oak entry door, detailed with solid copper inlay and a handcrafted bronze handle, creates a striking yet refined arrival point.

Sustainability and performance are integral to the home’s design. The north-facing orientation, considered eave overhangs and high-performance glazing allow the stone flooring to act as a natural thermal mass—minimising the need for mechanical heating, supported by in-floor hydronic systems when required.

Inside, Hedger Constructions’ commitment to craftsmanship is evident throughout. A raked Tasmanian oak ceiling defines the central living zone, complemented by light-honed Italian natural stone flooring that subtly reflects the movement of natural light.

At the heart of the home, a bespoke triple-sided wood fireplace—crafted from individually shaped limestone—anchors the space, paired with a sculptural chimney that enhances the sense of volume and warmth.

The interiors, thoughtfully curated by Studio McGilp, balance the clean, linear architectural language with softer, organic forms. A cohesive palette and layered textures create an atmosphere of relaxed luxury, while a collection of commissioned artworks, hand-blown glass pieces and bespoke furnishings add individuality and depth.

The kitchen is both functional and refined, bathed in natural light from an expansive glazing package, including electric-opening clerestory windows that promote passive ventilation. Custom cabinetry in low chroma tones enhances the sense of calm, while a silica-free Corian benchtop with waterfall edge and cantilevered detail provides a sculptural focal point. A discreet butler’s pantry ensures the main space remains uncluttered and highly functional.

Accommodation is thoughtfully zoned for privacy and comfort. Bedrooms are designed as intimate retreats, featuring bespoke upholstery, soft lighting and luxurious natural textiles.

The master suite embraces its elevated position, with a freestanding bath oriented toward panoramic valley views, complemented by a generous dressing room and ensuite.

A truly bespoke outcome, this residence reflects the strength of collaboration between builder, architect and interior designer to deliver enduring quality.
