Set high on a ridgeline in the Dandenong Ranges, just an hour east of Melbourne, Red Crest House overlooks a pastoral valley framed by mature oak and elm trees. Positioned on the crest of the hill, two angled wings wrap gently around a central courtyard, creating a striking sense of arrival. The stepped form follows the natural contours of the land, while a cantilevered skillion roof with deep overhangs reinforces the home’s mid-century character.

A key priority of the design was to honour the client’s connection to the land. An earthy, enduring material palette—including native Australian timbers, natural stone, copper and polished concrete—ensures the home feels grounded, as though it has emerged organically from the red soil beneath it.

Inside, Hedger Constructions’ craftsmanship is evident in every detail. Hardwood-lined ceilings extend across the open-plan living zone, drawing the eye outward through frameless highlight windows to the surrounding landscape. These rich textures are balanced by light grey concrete floors, creating a refined yet tactile interior.

The main living area centres around a hand-laid stone fireplace and a sunken lounge, designed to connect occupants more closely to the landscape beyond. Carefully positioned timber-framed windows capture sweeping valley views from every living space and bedroom, reinforcing a constant dialogue between indoors and out.

The kitchen continues this material story, with bespoke timber cabinetry delivering warmth and authenticity. A sculptural curved island is finished with hand-cut moss green tiles, adding subtle geometric detail. In the adjacent dining space, a concealed bar—hidden behind walnut pocket doors and finished in striking marble—introduces an element of surprise and refined functionality.

Interior styling, curated by Simone Haag, complements the architecture with a thoughtful blend of mid-century pieces and contemporary design, creating a home that feels both elevated and deeply personal. This restrained design language continues into the master suite, where soft textures, layered finishes and carefully selected lighting create a calm and private retreat.

Bathrooms feature blackbutt timber detailing and terrazzo tiles, paired with bronzed fixtures and custom joinery to maintain the home’s natural, cohesive palette.

A true collaboration between client, architect and builder, Red Crest House is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship. With a deep understanding of site, materiality and lifestyle, Hedger Constructions has delivered a home that is both timeless in character and exceptional in execution.
