The Thornton Country Retreat set in the serene landscape of regional Victoria, is the result of a deeply collaborative design and build journey. From the outset, builder, architect, interior and landscape designers joined the clients on site to shape a shared vision—one inspired by the quiet strength and gentle contours of the surrounding hills.
Designed as a “lock and leave” country retreat for Melbourne-based owners, the home balances intimacy with flexibility. The brief called for a cosy escape for two that could effortlessly expand to accommodate family and guests. The solution is a pavilion-style layout, with three distinct volumes connected by glazed walkways. At the heart of the home, a central gabled living pavilion provides a warm and inviting hub, while two flanking pavilions house private bedroom suites that can be closed off when not in use.

The central living space is defined by a striking geometric fireplace that rises to meet the roof pitch. Clad in handmade ceramic tiles, it forms a sculptural focal point, framed by expansive glazing that captures ever-changing views of the surrounding bushland.

A floating concrete hearth extends from the base, creating a place for seating, display and quiet reflection—enhanced by a custom window seat and soft, ambient lighting. Materiality plays a key role in grounding the home within its landscape. Sandstone crazy paving flows beneath the fireplace and into the entry and powder room, creating a tactile connection between indoors and out. This is carefully balanced with blackbutt timber flooring, requiring precise craftsmanship to achieve a seamless transition between textures.

Designed to embrace its environment, the central pavilion opens completely to the outdoors during warmer months, with full-height glazing dissolving the boundary between interior living spaces and the surrounding deck and landscape. Externally, a palette of cement blockwork and metal sheeting reflects a contemporary rural aesthetic while providing durability and fire resistance.

This strong connection to nature is further reinforced through a restrained, biophilic design approach—bringing natural patterns, textures and tones into the home to create a calm and restorative atmosphere.

Exposed timber trusses, a pitched roof form and subtle industrial detailing add character and warmth. The kitchen continues the home’s refined simplicity, featuring concrete benchtops, integrated appliances and custom cabinetry that conceals functional elements while maintaining a clean, uncluttered aesthetic.

Bathrooms feature curved walls, recessed niches and handmade tiles, complemented by brass tapware, bespoke concrete basins and custom steel-framed mirrored storage—each element carefully detailed to achieve a cohesive and elevated result.

Bedrooms are designed as restful retreats, layered with soft finishes including sheer curtains, upholstered bedheads and textured carpets. A palette inspired by the surrounding snow gum landscape—soft blues, warm neutrals and pale terracotta—creates a sense of quiet harmony throughout.

With its “less is more” philosophy, this residence sits lightly within the landscape, prioritising thermal efficiency, connection to nature and understated luxury. The result is a timeless rural sanctuary—crafted with precision to offer a place of calm, comfort and escape from the pace of everyday life.
