The redevelopment of Yea Primary School delivers flexible, light-filled learning environments tailored to the needs of a growing rural community.

The project centred around the creation of new open-plan classrooms and collaborative learning spaces, designed to support modern teaching methods and encourage interaction between students and educators. The layout prioritises adaptability, allowing spaces to be reconfigured to suit a variety of learning styles—from focused individual work to group-based activities. This flexibility fosters a more dynamic and engaging educational environment, aligned with contemporary curriculum delivery.

Natural light and ventilation play a central role in the design. Expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing draws daylight deep into the interiors, creating bright and uplifting spaces that enhance concentration and wellbeing. Complementing this, louvered clerestory windows promote effective cross-ventilation, allowing fresh air to circulate naturally throughout the building and reducing reliance on mechanical systems.

Material selection and detailing have been approached with durability and longevity in mind, ensuring the facilities can withstand the demands of daily school use while maintaining a welcoming and contemporary aesthetic. Clean lines, robust finishes and a neutral palette provide a calm backdrop for learning, while also allowing the spaces to evolve over time.

In addition to the new teaching areas, the project included the development of upgraded bathroom facilities, designed to meet current standards and support the increased capacity of the school. These amenities are seamlessly integrated into the overall layout, ensuring ease of access and practical functionality for students and staff.

The result is a cohesive and future-focused educational environment—one that supports immersive learning, encourages collaboration and responds thoughtfully to its rural setting.
