Resilient Rural Residence
A considered response to building in a remote, bushfire-prone location
Positioned along a ridgeline in rural north-east Victoria, this striking residence is carefully sited to capture uninterrupted 360-degree views of the Cathedral Ranges.
In responding to the challenges of building in a remote, bushfire-prone location, material selection was a critical consideration. The exterior is clad in non-combustible Colorbond Longline in Monument, complemented by painted cement sheeting and accents of natural stone. Thermally broken steel-framed windows and doors enhance energy efficiency while reinforcing the home’s clean, contemporary lines. A discreetly integrated bunker further supports bushfire safety, with the home exceeding BAL 40 requirements—delivering both resilience and peace of mind.

Internally, the home is organised as two distinct wings, connected by a central gallery that acts as both a physical and visual link between private and shared spaces. This thoughtful planning allows for a clear separation between restful retreat areas and vibrant communal zones, while maintaining a strong sense of cohesion throughout. Sliding glass doors allow these areas to be opened or closed as needed, offering flexibility and acoustic separation without compromising flow.

The open-plan kitchen, dining and living space has been designed to balance scale with intimacy. A recycled timber beam runs the length of the ceiling, adding warmth and character while subtly defining each zone. Pendant lighting and ceiling fans suspended from the beam enhance the relaxed, contemporary feel.

The kitchen is tailored for entertaining, with generous preparation areas, extensive storage and a waterfall-edge island that invites gathering. An adjoining bar with custom cabinetry provides the perfect setting to enjoy the surrounding views with family and friends.

The dining area comfortably accommodates a large table and connects seamlessly to outdoor entertaining spaces, including an inground pool and putting green. In the lounge, a hand-laid natural stone chimney frames the fireplace, creating a cosy focal point. Integrated seating, storage and study nooks add layers of functionality, ensuring the space adapts to everyday family life.

Bedrooms and bathrooms continue the home’s cohesive material palette. Timber joinery, neutral-toned tiles and matte black fittings combine to create calm, grounded interiors. The master suite offers a private retreat, complete with its own fireplace, scenic outlooks and a cleverly concealed walk-in robe positioned behind the bedhead wall.

Designed with flexibility in mind, the children’s bedroom incorporates custom-built bunk beds that can be neatly concealed behind bi-fold doors—an ideal solution for accommodating guests while maintaining a clean, uncluttered aesthetic.

This exceptional home is a testament to delivering innovative, site-responsive design—balancing beauty, functionality and resilience to create a truly enduring rural sanctuary.
