Located within a high bushfire-risk region, Narbethong Community Hall needed to meet stringent protection requirements while reflecting the history of the local timber industry—delivering a flexible, contemporary venue for events of all scales. Engaged to bring this vision to life, Hedger Constructions adopted a considered approach that balances performance, functionality and a strong connection to place.

Bushfire protection was a defining factor in the building’s design. The exterior incorporates expansive floor-to-ceiling double-glazed windows, shielded by bronze fire-resistant screens. This layered façade not only enhances safety, but also softens the building’s presence within the surrounding landscape, allowing it to sit comfortably within its natural context. Adding to its adaptability, sections of the external walls have been engineered to open via an automated system, lifting to create a seamless transition between indoors and out and establishing a welcoming, community-focused atmosphere.

Internally, the material palette celebrates the region’s timber heritage. Messmate flooring is complemented by recycled messmate lining to the ceiling, creating warmth and continuity throughout the space. A series of striking 3.8-metre-high vertical timber fins, crafted from laminated blackbutt, curve through the interior—an architectural gesture that references the nearby forests of the Black Spur while also performing a practical role. These sculptural elements subtly divide the expansive hall into smaller, more intimate zones, allowing the space to adapt to a wide range of uses.

Flexibility is central to the building’s function. The main hall can be reconfigured through the use of theatrical-style blinds, enabling multiple events or activities to occur simultaneously. Direct access to a northern outdoor terrace further extends the usable footprint, encouraging connection with the surrounding environment and supporting larger gatherings.

Supporting facilities have been designed to a high standard, ensuring the hall meets the needs of modern community use. A fully equipped commercial kitchen, complete with durable stone benchtops, allows for catering at scale, while multi-access bathroom amenities provide inclusive and practical solutions for diverse user groups. Externally, a dedicated BBQ area—constructed with complementary materials and a continued emphasis on timber—enhances the venue’s capacity for informal events and social gatherings.

The result is a resilient, adaptable and architecturally expressive community asset. Through careful material selection, innovative building techniques and a deep respect for local context, Hedger Constructions has delivered a hall that not only meets the demands of its environment, but also celebrates the character and heritage of the community it serves.
