Situated on a compact inner-urban block in Melbourne, this classic terrace has been thoughtfully reimagined into a light-filled, contemporary family home, while remaining deeply respectful of its heritage origins.
The brief for this project centred on extending and modernising the residence without compromising its original character. Through careful planning and a considered approach to the home’s structural limitations, key period details have been preserved and restored, while new additions introduce a fresh, functional layout suited to modern living.

From the street, the home retains its historic charm, with the original colour palette maintained and intricate fretwork meticulously restored. Inside, the entry hallway sets the tone, where a curved arch, ceiling roses and decorative plasterwork have been returned to their former elegance. Herringbone timber flooring draws the eye through the home, leading to a subtle transition between old and new, marked by a curved glass door that separates the private front rooms from the open-plan living zone beyond.

The rear of the home has been completely reconfigured to create a generous, light-filled extension. A raised ceiling with dual skylights enhances the sense of volume, allowing natural light to flood the kitchen, dining and living areas. The kitchen itself strikes a refined balance between classic and contemporary, with dark shaker-style cabinetry offset by warm metallic fittings and crisp marble benchtops.

Flowing seamlessly into the living and dining areas, a newly introduced period-style fireplace anchors the space, flanked by custom cabinetry that integrates storage without disrupting the design. Full-height glazing and steel-framed French doors open onto a private courtyard, creating a strong indoor-outdoor connection and extending the living space for entertaining. Outdoors, bluestone paving, custom timber seating and a recycled brick wall combine to deliver both warmth and privacy.

Throughout the home, wet areas have been carefully updated to reflect a cohesive blend of heritage detailing and modern performance. Bathrooms and the laundry feature considered material selections and refined finishes, while the bedrooms have been enhanced with bespoke joinery and restored original fireplace surrounds.

Every aspect of the renovation has been guided by a commitment to balance—preserving the integrity of the original terrace while introducing contemporary comfort and light. The result is a cohesive and highly liveable home that celebrates its past while confidently embracing modern family life.
