Awards:
- MBAV Best Custom Home Between $1M – $2M, Northeast Region 2016
The brief for this custom build called for a home that could balance relaxed family living with the practical needs of a hobby farm, while also providing generous, well-defined zones for entertaining and guest accommodation. The result is a carefully composed design that sits effortlessly within its environment. Positioned to nestle into a gentle embankment at the rear, the home opens toward expansive river views at the front, with a distinctive roofline drawing the eye outward.

A central open-plan kitchen, dining and living area forms an inviting communal hub designed for connection and shared experience. American oak flooring flows throughout the main living spaces, while full-height door openings enhance the sense of scale.

The kitchen is both functional and visually striking, featuring two-pack cabinetry, stone waterfall benchtops and a considered layout for everyday use and entertaining. In the adjoining living area, a raised open fireplace with a polished concrete hearth creates a strong focal point, anchoring the space with texture and presence.

A key feature of the home is its zoned layout, which separates private owner and guest wings at either end of the plan. Each zone is fully self-contained, with spacious bedrooms, ensuites, robes and retreat areas, allowing for comfort and independence.

Outdoor living is seamlessly integrated, with expansive verandahs, stone paving and large sliding glazed doors extending the interior outward. Timber feature fins add depth to the façade, while clerestory windows within the varying roof pitch introduce additional natural light and architectural interest.

Sustainability has been carefully considered, with high-performance double glazing, extensive insulation and attention to airtightness contributing to year-round comfort. Tank water services the home, supported by solar hot water, while zoned lighting and heating and cooling systems ensure efficient energy use. Blending innovative design with practical living, this home is a refined rural retreat—crafted to respond to its setting while delivering comfort, flexibility and enduring quality.
