Set within the scenic landscape of Flowerdale, this energy-efficient, off-grid home maximises solar performance while embracing expansive rural views.
Compact in footprint yet generous in experience, the residence is carefully positioned on a ridge line to capture sweeping outlooks and support year-round indoor and outdoor living. This fully off-grid property integrates all services and infrastructure within the build to ensure complete autonomy. The home is powered by a solar PV system with battery storage, supported by LPG for hot water and cooking, while water tanks and treatment systems provide independent water management.

Passive design principles underpin the home’s performance. Polished concrete floors run throughout the open-plan living spaces, providing thermal mass that absorbs and releases heat naturally. Double-glazed commercial-grade windows frame the surrounding countryside and allow winter sun to warm the slab, while high levels of insulation and meticulous sealing ensure thermal efficiency across all seasons. Exposed masonry block internal walls further enhance thermal performance, while introducing a grounded, textural aesthetic.

Internally, the design continues a palette of earthy tones and tactile finishes. The open-plan living area is flooded with natural light, with glazing on three sides drawing the landscape deep into the home. A Chiminees Philippe wood heater, set on a custom concrete hearth, anchors the sunken lounge and creates a warm, inviting focal point during cooler months.

The kitchen is designed with simplicity and practicality in mind, featuring clean-lined cabinetry and durable Caesarstone benchtops. Bathrooms and ensuite are positioned side-by-side to optimise plumbing efficiency, with floor-to-ceiling tiling and custom messmate timber vanities reinforcing the home’s natural material palette.

The home’s compact planning is balanced by a strong connection to outdoor living. Large sliding doors extend the living space onto a covered deck, designed for year-round use. A second wood heater, positioned back-to-back with the internal fireplace, visually and functionally links the indoor and outdoor zones.

Externally, the home is clad in Colorbond steel, selected to minimise visual impact and reflect the tonal qualities of the surrounding hills. A large steel-clad entry door, now naturally weathered, introduces a rugged, material honesty that complements the rural setting.

Throughout, careful consideration has been given to siting, solar orientation and spatial efficiency to ensure optimal passive performance and visual connection to the landscape. This project reflects a highly collaborative and detail-driven process, with Hedger Constructions managing all aspects from planning and permits through to trade coordination and final delivery. The finished residence is a refined example of off-grid living—where sustainability, functionality and craftsmanship come together to create a resilient, low-maintenance home deeply connected to its environment.
